Restaurant Delivery System for Windows

The Restaurant Delivery system is an application that was originally written in PICK Basic and ran on an R83 system. It was used among others by A la Carte Express, a Washington DC service that deliveres meals from about 100 Restaurants.

Figure1,2 and 3 show some typical screens for the terminal version of the system:

Though this system was very capable of supporting a growing business, it limitations became painfully clear. The maintenance of database files was difficult and therefore often neglegted. A growing importance of the Internet also influenced the decision to migrate the application to PICK D3 on Windows NT and to rewrite the front end in Visual Basic.

Here the new menu: The restaurant info:

Another great advantage of using Visual Basic is the wealth of third party tools that is available. in this specific application I used a credit card processing ActiveX control from Go software, automatic paging of orders to drivers with a page OCX and Faxing of the orders with a faxing package. I didn't have to recreate these features, just tie them in.
