The Quaternion Quantum Leap

Atomic Transitions and Spectral Lines from Quaternion Geometry

Martin Scholl — Independent Researcher — 2026

Abstract

We apply the geometry of the unit quaternion sphere to the quantum mechanical description of atomic energy transitions, deriving the spectral line series of hydrogen from first principles. The quantum leap — the discontinuous jump of an electron between energy levels — emerges naturally as a rotation on the quaternion 3-sphere. The discrete energy levels and the Rydberg formula follow from the allowed rotational symmetries of the algebra, with no adjustable parameters.
